The Hello World! program is usually the first program written by people learning to code, so I put it as the title for my first post about data science.
I am Vesna Lukic, a data scientist and machine learning engineer. At university I studied engineering and science, and did a masters in Physics. I then worked as a bioinformatician at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of medical research, where I was introduced to the emerging field of data science. I was astounded as to the power that genetic data has in finding the cause of a particular inherited disease, and more broadly, the potential that medical data has on achieving the goal of personalised medicine. There is no question that data, the way it is analysed and made use of has an ever increasing power in our lives. A broad range of fields, for example social media, finance, marketing and science are making use of data. Wanting to learn more, so I completed a PhD in machine learning.
I want to share my knowledge and experience in analysing a diverse range of datasets. I will cover areas including data exploration and mining, and machine learning. One of my aims is to make data science transparent and accessible to a wide audience. Machine learning techniques have been criticized as being black-box approaches to solving problems, and I would like to ‘lift the veil’ and expose how these approaches work at the base level.
My posts will be about how to start a project and how to approach different problems in data science, and the use of different machine learning techniques. The posts are targeted towards people interested in data science, machine learning, or bioinformatics.
I welcome feedback on my content as I am committed towards growth and improvement. Please let me know your thoughts on my posts. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions and suggestions.
